How to stay active at home during Coronavirus

During these strange times it’s more important than ever to stay active at home, listen to your body and focus on the things you CAN control.

Luckily, one of the things you can control is keeping fit and healthy, even if you’re stuck indoors.

Did you know that exercise can help keep your immune system strong and less susceptible to infections? Here’s why:

  1. Exercise increases the amount of white blood cells which help your body fight infection
  2. Exercise can flush bacteria from your lungs
  3. The rise in body temperature during and right after may prevent bacteria from forming
  4. Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones which can lead to an increased risk of disease and infection.

Being active also helps us function well, prevent weight gain and keep the spirits up during these challenging times.

So, with that in mind, here are my top 5 tips on how to stay active during the crisis.

1. Spend less time sitting

If you’re working from home, like many people are, it’s important to take regular breaks from sitting in front of your computer. Aim to take a 1-2 minute break every 30 minutes. Try walking around your home or playing with your dog, if you have one!

2. Workout with me at home

You really don’t need much space or equipment to get a great workout at home. If you haven’t already, try my online program. Every week I challenge you with 5 totally new cardio and strength workouts that you can do at home with minimal equipment.

3. Play with pets and kids

Try some active play with your two and four legged friends. This is a great opportunity to have fun and get your heart rate up at the same time. Win. Win.

4. Take the stairs

If you have stairs in your home make them your new best friend! You could try short intervals, running up the stairs as fast as you can for 20 seconds and then resting for 10 seconds and repeating.

5. Become a dancing queen

There have been SO many great dance videos going around over the last few weeks. Stay active at home by making your own or if that’s not your thing, pump up your music and dance around your house like nobody’s watching.
